Allen Park
Home of the American football team Detroit Lions (since 2002), Allen Park is a city in Wayne County Michigan, U.S. As of the 2000 census, the population was 29,376. This suburb of Detroit was recognized in Money Magazine's list of Best Small American Cities and it is part of the collection of communities known as Downriver.
The city that carries the team where hall of famer Alex Wojciechowicz used to play, acknowledges Ford Motor Company is an integral part of its community. Many of Ford Motor Company's offices and facilities lie within the city limits.
It was in 1927 when Allen Park was incorporated as a village, and as a city in 1957. It was named after Lewis Allen, a well-to-do lawyer and lumberman whose 276½ acres of land (primarily in Ecorse Township) included holdings in what are now Allen Park and Melvindale. Hubert Champaign and Edward Pepper were two other early known residents of the community.
A clarification in land boundary, Allen Park did not include the part of the city directly west of Melvindale, Michigan (in 1950). This area was still part of Ecorse Township.
Allen Park houses the world's largest tire: Uniroyal Tire. The tire, moved from the 1964 New York World's Fair to Allen Park in 1966, is 80 feet tall and weighs 12 tons. The tire is located off Interstate 94.
